From OR to boardroom: Transferring surgical skills to executive leadership roles

Surgeons develop skills throughout their career that provide a good foundation for executive leadership. Leadership, communication, and decision making are necessary for success in the Operating Room and the Boardroom. With effective mentoring, intentional study to broaden their knowledge base, and experience gained from participation in activities outside their clinical practice, surgeons can evolve to become effective leaders within the healthcare system. Executive leadership offers surgeons a rewarding means of utilizing their knowledge, skill, and experience to serve their colleagues and their communities.
