Surgeons continue to acquire skills as they progress as leaders. While some skills can be achieved from practice, books, and continuing medical education, the role of sponsors, mentors, and coaching cannot be overstated in helping individuals and incorporating new skills. Sponsors are key in providing opportunities and advancement. Mentors advise from their experience, and coaches are skilled at providing perspective. Understanding the roles of sponsors, mentors, and coaches, as well as their utility in guiding a surgeon's career is discussed in the chapter.
