Protein materials, by blueprint

In the construction of a building, blueprints connect architects and builders. Architects define the measurements and floor plans, and builders translate this vision into tangible structures. To do this, builders rely on standardized materials, like lumber, that come in any given size and fit together seamlessly.

As they now describe in Nature, Baker and colleagues have designed regular protein building blocks that can be combined — following a standard blueprint — into a variety of architectures.
