The article covers the changes in the “we-mode” triggered by the move from physical to digital communities, as well as examines the neural foundations of the "we-mode" using contemporary neuroscience research. With the term “we-mode”, the authors refer to neurocognitive processes underlying the synchronization of different neurophysiological parameters, including heart rate and neural oscillations, occurring in social interactions.

The authors of this article put out a paradigm that considers emotional contagion, social conformity, and coordinated movement as interconnected processes that depend on common brain networks. Expanding upon the predictive coding paradigm, we propose that a three-component feedback loop mediates social alignment: an alignment system that responds to misalignment, an error-monitoring system that keeps track of errors, and a reward system that kicks in when alignment is achieved. We characterize syndromes associated with herding (loneliness, autism) and advocate for novel research to explore the connections between the alignment levels.

Body, emotions, and sexuality in the metaverse: a randomized control trial exploring the use of second life for an avatar-based intervention to support women with female orgasmic disorders. PsyArXiv Preprints. 2024. https://doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/qju56. This was the first RCT study to evaluate the effectiveness of an avatar-based intervention for female orgasmic dysfunction (FOD) sufferers. Based on the cognitive-behavioral and acceptance and commitment therapies, the avatar-based intervention comprised 12 weekly online individual sessions with the major goals of enhancing the FOD diagnosis, sexual satisfaction, function, and initiative, as well as sexual self-esteem, sexual guilt, and sexual anxiety. With respect to the control group, where traditional sexual coaching was delivered, the experimental group showed increased improvement in every sexual domain.
