In 2019, when the Covid-19 pandemic quickly spread throughout the world, mRNA vaccines literally became a global life-saver. Without this vaccine, the loss of life would have been far greater than it was, although millions still did die from Covid-19. But it took considerable time before the vaccine could be rolled out and distributed. Simply having a vaccine is not enough, it first needs to be tested for safety and efficacy, then produced/manufactured, before being distributed to the affected populations. This process normally takes (at least) five-plus years, but in this case, it was undertaken and accomplished in record, and unbelievable, time, although not equitably around the world. While we give deserved recognition to the scientists and researchers who developed this vaccine, in particular Katalin Karikó, who dedicated her professional life to developing mRNA, it is also necessary to appreciate the pivotal contribution that Moderna, BioNTech and Pfizer, and other pharma companies made. They were the critical, and indispensable, manufacturers of the mRNA vaccines.
