Dementia and Cognitive Geriatric Disorders was conceived in 1989 in Zurich, Switzerland as a much-needed platform for burgeoning research in dementing disorders and treatment regimens. It came to fruition the following year, thanks to the steadfast enthusiasm and dedication of Dr. Thomas Karger of Karger Medical Publishers (Basel, Switzerland). Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders EXTRA was launched 20 years later in response to new online needs. Both Journals have endured with distinction under the leadership of Dr. Gabriella Karger. The success of Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders and the EXTRA online platform are testaments to 32 years of dedicated and continuous collaboration. We note these with gratitude and pleasure.
Our sincere thanks go to the editorial, production, and marketing staff of Karger. Our daily interactions over vast distances and many years began well before virtual work became a reality.
The Editorial Board and external advisors have been exemplary, contributing assiduous time and effort towards producing the many volumes of these two publications. Our high standards were achieved thanks to their service, dedication, and commitment to excellence. For all these efforts, upon which we have relied, we are deeply grateful. Most importantly, our thanks go out to all the authors who have published in our journals. We have sought to respect your voices as authors. We could not have done it without you!
We celebrate scientists in the great centers of dementia research in the USA, Europe, Australia, and Japan for their strength, thrust, and leadership in their specific fields. We have been privileged to publish your work in our journals. Now there is increasing recognition that dementia is a world health problem, not restricted to industrialized countries. To this end, we have encouraged strengthening presentation of research efforts in dementia from other parts of the world. Our aim has been to encourage and raise standards, recognizing work of researchers, clinicians, and health practitioners from around the globe. Thus, we have sought to publish selected articles from beyond the well-known centers of research.
As the field continues to grow and evolve, we have identified our new Editor-in-Chief after an extensive global search. Full attention was paid to future directions of the Journals, and this handover has been executed mindfully. Today, with full confidence, we turn the platform over to Professor John B. Kwok to continue the exciting work ahead.
