Standardization in forensic genetics—A multi-faceted challenge in Poland

In the context of standardization, particularly important are guidelines and recommendations laid out in individual countries, as one of the most important factors in high quality research performed in the field of forensic genetics. These can be developed by the most respected and recognized forensic experts taking into account their own experience and basing on universally recognized international recommendations, of which the ISFG recommendations seem to be the most relevant.

Work in this area as a part of standardization in forensic genetics in Poland has begun on February 15, 2018 at the Medical University of Lodz, where the first meeting of the Team of Experts for Standards and Assessment in Forensic Genetics of the Polish Speaking Working Group of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (TSA ISFG-PL) took place [Introduction to the work towards standardization in the field of forensic genetics at the first Lodz meeting of the expert team for standards and assessment in forensic genetics of the Polish Speaking Working Group of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (TSA-ISFG.PL).]. As a result, the introduction to the guidelines in Poland with reference to the work of the above Expert Team, as well as first recommendations regarding forensic mitochondrial DNA testing have been published along with other preliminary outcomes [Standardization of research in the field of forensic genetics—the current state in the world and introduction to the guidelines in Poland with reference to the work of the expert team for standards and assessment in forensic genetics of the Polish Speaking Working Group of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (ISFG-PL).,Grzybowski T. Recommendations of the Polish Speaking Working Group of the International Society for Forensic Genetics for forensic mitochondrial DNA testing.].Three further works, which were sent for publication or which are in the course of the final discussion and amendments prior to the submission to the publication, concern the guidelines in the following aspects:•typing of Y chromosome polymorphisms [Rębała K. examination of LT-DNA traces in forensics

disclosure of biological traces and handling of forensic evidence for identification tests

Additionally, preliminary work started for statistical analysis and standards in kinship analysis, including the disputed paternity.

Moreover, other works are preliminary agreed or awaiting development, which relate to:•

use of X chromosome polymorphisms in forensic genetics;

evaluation and reporting of proof value of DNA testing, including mixture analysis (LR and other parameters);

complex statistical analysis, including mutations, linkages, inbreeding;

cooperation in creating databases of allele frequencies in the Polish population.
