Experiences and attitudes to sexual health services for young people: a national survey of people aged 13-24 years in Britain

Introduction

Young people aged under 25 years have specific sexual health needs.1 2 The introduction of integrated care systems3 provides an opportune moment for practitioners and policy makers to evaluate and tailor services for this population. To better understand young people’s experiences of sexual health services (SHS), the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) Adolescent Special Interest Group (ASIG) conducted a survey of young people in Britain.

Method

An online anonymous survey was developed alongside the ASIG young people’s representative member, covering experiences of, preferences for and barriers to SHS in people aged under 25 years. The survey was live between 23 March and 5 September 2022. Respondents were recruited opportunistically in clinical and school settings and via professional and community networks (including BASHH; Brook,4 a UK young people’s sexual health charity; and East London Out Project,5 a lesbian and gay young people’s centre in London). The survey was provided via e-link or QR code on posters and social media posts in participating settings, as such there was not a formal consent process for recruitment. Data were analysed descriptively in Stata V.18.
