Beyond the brain: General intensive care considerations in pediatric neurocritical care

Pediatric neurocritical care is an evolving field based on a multi-disciplinary care delivery model for children with critical neurological conditions, bringing together the knowledge and expertise of pediatric neurology, neurosurgery, and critical care medicine. The severely impaired brain affects many organs within the body while demanding a high-level of support from the same organs to heal. Therefore, patients require a holistic approach with consideration of the whole human body, which is the core principle of critical care. From ventilator management and neuro-cardiopulmonary interactions to nutrition and rehabilitation, the healing brain requires consideration of all these aspects of intensive care (Fig. 1). This review serves to provide an overview of these general intensive care considerations.
