Youngest hand injury during cesarean delivery: A case report

Hand injuries happen frequently in everyday life, but fetal hand injuries are rare and usually iatrogenic. According to our literature review, cesarean delivery is the most common context of fetal hand injury.

Fetal laceration is an acknowledged risk of cesarean delivery, with incidence ranging from 0.7% to 3.12% [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. Most lacerations are superficial, involving only the skin, and occur in the head region [1], [3], [6]. The rarity of fetal hand lacerations, such as in the present case, underlines the need for careful surgical technique and informed consent regarding potential complications. The literature reports 4 flexor and 2 extensor fetal hand lacerations during cesarean delivery [7], [8], [9], [10], [11]. To the best of our knowledge, our patient's hand injury is unique in that it is the youngest hand injury during cesarean delivery described in the literature: the patient was a preterm neonate of 27 weeks’ gestational age.
