Quality and safety in the literature: January 2024

Healthcare quality and safety span multiple topics across the spectrum of academic and clinical disciplines. Keeping abreast of the rapidly growing body of work can be challenging. In this series, we provide succinct summaries of selected relevant studies published in the last several months. Some articles will focus on a particular theme, whereas others will highlight unique publications from high-impact medical journals.

In March 2023, participants from more than 50 countries convened at the first global summit on postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) in Dubai.1 The need for a global forum for a single medical condition underscores the devastating impact of PPH. PPH is the leading direct cause of maternal mortality.2 Delays in the detection and effective management of PPH may lead to adverse outcomes. While evidence-based guidelines for PPH management exist and are frequently updated,3 these guidelines alone do not ensure automatic implementation with adequate fidelity.
